Motorcycle Jackets – Essential tips for the perfect fit!

10th Jun 2019

First and foremost, you should always consider the origin of the jacket you are interested in buying a jacket as sizes tend to vary. Italians tend to make their jackets more fitted whereas the Brits and Germans are more generous around the waist. If you have larger neck, you need to buy a jacket with an adjustable collar. If you like to wear your gloves inside your jacket, choose one with adjustable cuffs. There is a style out there to suit every kind of rider!

Measuring up for the right fit

Chest measurements are used to determine jacket sizes. Firstly, you will need a tape measure. Then you need to measure the fullest part of your chest (the tape should sit across your nipples as this is the largest area for around your chest). Place the tape underneath your arms and make sure its flush against your back to get the most accurate measurement.
*Just remember if your waist is slightly larger than your chest, take this into consideration when measuring and choosing your size!

Choosing the right style for you

Not only do you have different jackets for different riding styles, but jackets are also manufactured out of leather or textile materials.

Leather jackets tend to provide more abrasion protection however, they won’t protect you from the rain! Leather jackets aren’t waterproof and can be heavy to wear after a while. On the other hand, textile jackets tend to be waterproof, but would be to baggy to wear on a sports bike.

Racing jackets are more fitted and contoured for a forward lean or tuck sitting style. More relaxed sport jackets will lack this contour, but still offers the same protection as racking jackets. Shorter jackets are better suited to this riding style as they won’t ruck up at the front.

On the other hand, touring jackets (which will mainly be made of textile) will have a baggier feel to them. Despite this, they still offer the same protection as the other styles as well as adjustability in some cases. Longer jackets tend to be better suited for touring and upright bikes as it keeps your waist warmer. If you tend to ride all year round, your best choosing touring jackets that have a removable thermal lining, so you can wear it in all seasons.

Extra protection!

Another thing you should always be mindful of when buying jackets is that not only does it have armour but that it is also CE approved. Depending on the style you choose depends on what armour the jacket is equipped with. Majority come with shoulder and elbow armour. Most race a sport jackets will be supplied with back protectors as well. However, not all touring jackets are but it is always good to check that the jacket has a pocket so that you have the option to protect your back, if you feel you need to do so.

Getting it right for you

No matter what the style, you don’t want a jacket to roll around your body or ride up it as you sit on the motorbike. Armour shouldn’t slide about either! When you purchase a new jacket, if you can, sit on your bike to double check it fits well went sat and it stays where it should.
